The Ray Barretto album Portraits of Jazz in Clave threw together Ray's Latin Jazz group with some of the most unique soloists in modern jazz. Eddie Gomez brought his distinctive voice to the bass chair, soloing on some great standards, like Thelonious Monk's I Mean You. You can really hear the different prioritities Eddie has as a soloist than a traditional Latin player. His emphasis lies in harmonic tension rather than rhythmic structures and clave. His approach brings a whole fresh perspective into the Latin Jazz setting. It's an incredible solo by one of the important bassists in Jazz history.
