This hit from the NG La Banda album En La Calle, show many sides of
Feliciano Arango's bassline artistry. The body of the song shows
all the signs of Arango's timbaesqe tumbao - the off-beat emphasis, the
streams of eighth notes, and the chromatic passing tones. Then
the improvisatory sections have one of those great Arango funk hooks
that made NG one of the grooviest dance bands of the nineties. To
top it off, there is some great slap playing - all in clave of course -
to take the moña off to another plane. Not to mention all
the coloristic techniques - chords, muted notes, grace notes, and
subtle variations - that give the line such character. There are so
many great lessons in this one, about timba, technique, and creating a
unique voice within the music.
