Salsa Conga Explosion!
When reflecting upon my earlier post on 2 Legendary Latin Jazz Congueros, I realized that it was tragically flawed. A complete picture of Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria can’t be painted without including the battle story. The total history requires a telling of the ultimate Salsa battle royal, Congo Bongo . . . well, maybe more of a friendly gathering of Salsa superstars. Regardless, Congo Bongo brought together two important percussionists and created an unforgettable moment.
This night marked a milestone in Fania Records history. The Fania All-Stars, at the height of their popularity, were scheduled to perform in Yankee Stadium. The greatest Salsa band in the world playing in the greatest stadium in the world; everyone involved could feel the excitement. The concert took place during baseball season, so the contract stipulated that the audience must remain in the bleachers. A minor inconvenience, but not really anything that could stop this event.
The band prepared for the concert with extra care. They decided to start the show with a musical roller coaster, preparing the audience for a night to remember. The first song would be Congo Bongo, an epic conga duel between the two biggest names on the instrument: Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria. The music following Congo Bongo included some classic Fania All-Stars material, and everyone anticipated an incredible evening.
When the concert finally arrived, the band took the stage by storm. Congo Bongo delivered everything promised and more – Mongo and Barretto were on fire. The rest of the Fania All-Stars felt the energy and created a magical moment. The crowd felt the intensity too; with every new conga lick from Mongo and Barretto they became more frenzied. Before the song ended, the crowd went wild and rushed the stage. The band finished the song, but the contract was broken. The concert ended and security cleared the stadium.
So here’s The Fania All-Stars performing Congo Bongo live at Yankee Stadium. Even better, here’s Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria at their best . . . 2 Legendary Latin Jazz Congueros delivering an incredible performance!
