Links for the Week

Tim Nilan posted a rant on poor mastering of Grant Green recordings on the Jazz and Blues Music Reviews blog. This hit home for me, having made several purchases of “classic” Egrem recordings. They all sound pretty awful. You’d think that Egrem would bundles of cash from carefully re-mastered versions of early Irakere, Los Van Van, Ritmo Oriental, and more. Emusica recently did this with Fania’s back-catalog, and they are seeing some nice profits. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Last week, our album of the week, Vagabundeo/Wanderings came from Alexa Weber Morales. She holds many talents - outstanding vocalist, musical traveler, and . . . . blogger. Get the inside scoop right from Alexa at her blog ThinkSong!

Bill Harrison posted a start to a list of the 100 greatest jazz albums of all time on his blog Jazz Underneath. When I commented on this, Bill sent me a message asking about the 100 greatest Latin Jazz albums. I might be up to the challenge of creating this list, but ouch, that might take some serious thought!

I recently found this article on All About Jazz about Cuban bass great Cachao. Part interview, part historical overview, the article has a lot of great info, including discussion of Cachao’s early years as a symphonic bassist.

Enjoy!
