Thinking About The Next Generation - Insight & Rafi Malkiel on video
Each generation makes its claim on a musical tradition. Musicians from the earliest years are remembered as innovators - the musicians that bravely forged new frontiers and established the tradition. The following generations are often viewed in relationship to these original innovators. In a way, this is logical - many of the younger musicians learn the tradition by performing with older mentors. They often carry their mentors’ musical paths into the future and hopefully take the music in new directions. Some of these younger artists establish themselves as major figures, but in most cases, during their time with a mentor, they remain a follower. Eventually nature takes its course, and the mentors leave the tradition’s future in the hands of their students. At this point, the younger musicians take over the role as mentor and hopefully innovator, starting the cycle again.
Looking at the early stages of an artist’s career, it’s often hard to know what may follow. Affiliations with Latin Jazz legends do make a statement - the major names only hire the finest talent. The learning curve heightens as musicians travel and perform regularly with legendary artists. Other young musicians may display a natural ability in the music and see into the style’s finer points instinctively. The training can vary, and the results can still stagger the musical world. In reality, a musician’s education doesn’t reveal their future as an artist; it’s how they apply their education in early endeavors.
While we look at a variety of early bandleaders, what exactly should we be looking for in a Next Generation Latin Jazz artist? A dedication to the music’s dual tradition reflects a training in both Latin music and jazz. While many artists become proficient in one style, navigating both jazz and Latin music requires a thorough study. Their willingness to take risks with their music shows the potential for influence and innovation. It’s easy to imitate a legend or even put a slight spin on their style. Yet musicians become legends through their bravery and openness to change. These are all qualities that I hope the next generation takes to heart.
With this in mind, I’ve included some videos from two of the Next Generation artists nominated for the Best of 2007 Awards. Check out the dynamics of tradition and innovation in their music while you consider your vote. While you’re checking out these videos, don’t forget to consider our remaining nominees: Mari Rosa, The Rodriguez Brothers, and Frank Cano. Hopefully you’ll find some of these musicians worthy to lead the tradition into the future - enjoy!
