The John Santos Quintet & The Cuban Danzón - Two Important Concerts This Weekend

Bay Area Latin Jazz mainstay John Santos and his quintet will be presenting a special two-part educational concert series this weekend focusing upon the Cuban danzón. The first event will be held on Saturday night and will take the shape of a lecture and demonstration. Here, Santos will share his in-depth knowledge of Cuban music history, going into detail about the danzón’s development and the style’s musical elements. The concepts will be brought to life through specific demonstrations and full performances. The second event will occur on Sunday afternoon and will take the shape of a complete concert. Santos and his group will perform classic repertoire as well as original compositions, bringing their high level of musicality into the forefront. These two shows will provide an incredible opportunity to break apart one of Cuba’s most important musical styles.

The John Santos Quintet brings together the best of the San Francisco Bay Area’s thriving Latin music scene. Flautist John Calloway, pianist Marco Diaz, bassist Saul Sierra, and legendary timbalero Orestes Vilato support Santos in creating innovative Latin Jazz that brings together tradition and modern performance concepts. Their 2007 release Papa Mambo firmly established the group as a strong musical force, full of knowledge and artistic integrity. Following Santos’ groundbreaking 20-year commitment to the Bay Area Latin Jazz super group The Machete Ensemble, the quintet has ensured many more years of quality Latin Jazz in the Bay Area.

This promises to be an exciting event - if you’re in the Bay Area this weekend, don’t miss it!
