Latin Jazz This Week
Latin Jazz This Week will bring you a weekly look into news from the Latin Jazz world. You’ll find new releases, recommended performances, web finds, and more. Information about New Releases will be kept in the Current & Upcoming Releases tab at the top of the page. Performance dates will be kept in the Live Latin Jazz tab at the top of the page.
Descarga.com has posted articles on two masters that we’ve recently lost: Carlos “Patato” Valdes and Tata Güines. The Patato article features an extended obituary with some in-depth information about recording sessions and his different musical associations. The Güines article consists of a personal remembrance that includes some interesting bits about his time with Fajardo y Sus Estrellas. You can also check out the LJC articles on Patato and Güines.

Mapex Drums posted an interview with 2007 Latin Jazz Drum Kit Player of the Year Marlon Simon this past week. The interview provides some great insight into Simon’s background, his different roles as a musician, and education. Check out the interview HERE.

Saxophonist and LJC reader Julio Botti was kind enough to send me some of his music to help me with my exploration of Afro-Peruvian Jazz. This led me to check out his MySpace Page and his website. He’s got some fantastic music – an intriguing mix of jazz, Latin rhythms, and flamenco – definitely worth the listen!

Dave Askren: Trio Nuevo+

Chucho Valdes and Rueben Gonzalez: Tumi Sessions
