NEWS

There are two interviews with Bobby Sanabria floating around the web this week. The first interview, conducted by Eugene Marlow, can be found on Jazz.com. Marlow talks to Sanabria about the role of the drummer, Latin music history, radio, and the state of modern jazz. The second interview, posted on All About Jazz and conducted by Jason Crane, finds Sanabria talking about his background and his latest album, Big Band Urban Folktales. This is a transcription of an interview from Crane’s wonderful podcast, The Jazz Session - find the Sanabria podcast HERE. It’s great to see one of important voices in contemporary Latin Jazz getting so much attention - check them out!

Percussionist and composer Marlon Simon has been named one of three recipients for the 2008 Artists’ Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The $6800 fellowship will support Simon’s writing and help underwrite his next CD. Congratulations to Simon - it’s nice to see such a cutting edge Latin Jazz artist receiving the recognition that they deserve. Read a full article about the fellowship HERE.

With Cachao’s passing last week, there has been much talk about El Maestro. Hopefully, you’ve gotten to check out LJC’s Essential Cachao Recordings, Part 1 & Part 2 as well as the transcription of Cachao’s bass solo on “Descarga Cubana.” We’ll be continuing our look at Cachao’s life in the upcoming week. You can also check out a good overview of Cachao’s life at Stuck Between Stations. Reality TV also mentioned Cachao this week as Dancing With The Stars paid tribute to the creator of the Mambo.
