In Los Angeles this week, The Jazz Bakery will be hosting legendary percussionist Francisco Aguabella and his group. He’ll be leading a sextet including Jorge Carbonell on drums, Jonathon Pintoff on bass, Benn Clatworthy on sax/flute, Isaac Smith on trombone, Winston Byrd on trumpet and Andrew Goodloe on piano. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear this important Cuban percussionist playing his fiery brand of Latin Jazz!

Berkeley’s Jazz on Fourth Street Festival will be featuring plenty of great jazz, but make sure to check out the free performance at 3:00 by The John Santos Quartet. Santos leads the charge of high quality Latin Jazz coming out of the Bay Area, and this performance offers a great opportunity to hear the master free of charge! The day benefits the outstanding jazz education program at Berkeley High School, so check out some great music and support youth in jazz!

Pianist Kiki Sanchez will be presenting two free concerts this Friday in the Miami area. The first performance will feature Sanchez’s Afro-Peruvian Jazz Ensemble at Tropical Park while the second gig places Sanchez in a duet with saxophonist Arthur Barron. Sanchez has some inspiring piano chops and a wide knowledge of Afro-Peruvian music - his recently released instructional DVD, The Real Latin Piano & the Introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms, shares these skills. It’s a great path into the music!

Our current Spotlight Artist Venissa Santí will be leading her group in a performance at Philadelphia’s Raven’s Lounge. Her debut release Bienvenida has been in constant rotation on my iPod; the combination of outstanding vocals, inspired support from sympathetic musicians, and great arrangements combine into some great music. I’m wishing that I could be there, so someone please check it out and send me a report!
