NEWS

Congratulations to vocalist Venissa Santí who was recently awarded a 2008 PEW fellowship for her work with folkloric Cuban music. The $60,000 grant serves to support outstanding artists in the Philadelphia area, so it also serves to invigorate the area’s artistic community.

Santí provided LJC with some comments on the award:

“I am still in shock and at the same time being welcomed into the arms of a fantastic family of artists. I’m very proud to be a PEW Fellow. I plan to accelerate action with “Bienvenida” in ways I couldn’t before and plan to record two other records: A record of all originals, and the long awaited tribute to my grandfather composer Jacobo Ros Capablanca, who left all of his compositions to me. I hope to get in contact with some orchestral arrangers and perhaps even record in la Habana, we’ll see.”

Congratulations Venissa, you deserve it! You can check out more information on the grant HERE and get more information on Santí’s latest release Bienvenida HERE.

NPR has a great live broadcast of Guillermo Klein and Los Gauchos at The Village Vanguard archived on their website. Its some cutting edge jazz from the Argentinean composer; very interesting stuff. Check it out HERE.

Congratulations to drummer Bobby Sanabria whose album Big Band Urban Folktales received the Jazz Journalists 2008 Jazz Award for Best Latin Jazz Album and percussionist Candido Camero who won the 2008 award for best percussionist. These are two names in the Latin Jazz world that deserve plenty of recognition! You can check out the full list of award winners HERE.

Marc Myers at JazzWax did some interesting research into jazz and the Billboard charts. The resultant post, entitled Jazz Cracks the Top 40 (Part 1) provides ten top 10 jazz hits. Interestingly enough, 4 of them are Latin Jazz albums! Check it out; it’s a thought-provoking article.
