The San Francisco Jazz Festival recently held a concert honoring the work of local pianist Rebeca Mauleon. Her work with John Santos’ Machete Ensemble, her books the Salsa Guidebook and 101 Montunos, as well as her own albums, have inspired a generation of young Latin Jazz musicians and spread the word about Bay Area Latin Jazz. The outstanding Jazz Observer blog posted a review of the performance HERE.
The Manhattan School of Music will be honoring legendary Latin Jazz musician Tito Puente with a two day celebration held on Sunday November 2nd and Monday November 3rd. The first day will feature a panel discussion entitled “Inside Tito Puente – An American Master” that will include speakers Bobby Sanabria, Joe Conzo Sr., Ray Santos, and René Lopez. The second day will have a concert with the Manhattan School of Music’s Afro-Cuban Big Band, led by Bobby Sanabria, and titled “Tito Puente – Masterworks.” Read more about the event in an article from About.com’s jazz guide Jacob Teichroew HERE.
Bay Area Latin Jazz Percussionist John Santos will be giving a multi-media lecture this Tuesday, October 28th at The Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco. The lecture, entitled “Latin Jazz Bridging Past and Present,” shows how Latin Jazz “honors ancient traditions even as it breaks new ground.” The lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $15 – get more info HERE.
Jazz.com’s Tomas Peña recently posted an interview with trumpeter Pete Rodriguez. The article cover’s Rodriguez’s childhood, his dual career as a singer and trumpet player, and his current album El Alquimista / The Alchemist. It’s a great read – check it out HERE.
