NEWS

This past Thursday November 13th, the Latin Grammy Awards held their annual awards show in Houston, Texas, placing a good deal of attention upon a variety of popular figures, including Gloria & Emilio Estefan and Juanes. The Latin Jazz category was awarded to The Caribbean Jazz Project for their big band effort, Afro Bop Alliance. I’ve never been a big fan of the Latin Grammys, but we should wish Dave Samuels and the group an honest congratulations for their strong work!

Legendary Latin Jazz pianist Bebo Valdes celebrated his 90th birthday recently, continuing a lifelong passion around music. His recent release Live At The Village Vanguard confirms his artistic vitality and the strength of his musical vision. The San Francisco Chronicle recently published an interview with Valdes, focusing upon the recent release, a Latin Grammy nomination, and his current tour with son Chucho. Check it out HERE.

Hard to believe. I mean, I’m a big Dave Samuels fan and own numerous records featuring him BUT…..the BEST review I read about that record was lukewarm at best. With the absolute wealth of material and product out there to choose from can there be any more concrete evidence that the Grammy voting board has got their heads collectively up their asses!!?? Unbelievable. It truly shows that the people voting have no experience with the genre and if that’s the case, why are they voting!!?? I realize that this is more of the same ol’ same ol’ but I can’t help but think that this does a tremendous disservice to a genre that doesn’t need any disservices. I mean, if it’s going to be done half-assed than why bother? Imagine an adventurous music-lover out there deciding to give Latin Jazz a shot and based on this award, thinks he’s buying the BEST

    Double-posted, sorry!

  4. chip, November 18, 2008:

I completely agree with you Chazro, I was pretty disappointed in the results from the Latin Grammys. The Caribbean Jazz Project album was decent, but it certainly wasn’t the best of the year. The organization just isn’t digging deep enough; it’s very disappointing. Actually I thought that they only album in the nominees that was deserving was the Charlie Sepulveda album - it would’ve been nice to see that one win. You nailed the real issue on the head - when newcomers are looking for Latin Jazz this year, that’s going to be their first point of reference. I’d rather steer them towards Arturo O’Farrill, Bobby Sanabria, Dafnis Prieto, or Papo Vazquez. It’s too bad . . .
