You can check out some current sounds in the Listening Center tab at the top of the page. Performance dates will be kept in the Live Latin Jazz tab at the top of the page.

NEWS

Percussionist Chembo Corniel has been getting a good deal of internet coverage these days, with good reason - his new album Things I Wanted To Do is an amazing recording. We’ve been talking about Corniel a bit this week here at LJC, so make sure that you follow the links below and find the two Latin Jazz Photo Albums on Corniel. Elsewhere, journalist Nate Chinen discusses Corniel’s recent performance at the Creole Restaurant on his blog The Gig - check it out HERE. Tomas Peña also checked out the Creole concert and you can find his feedback on Jazz.com HERE.

Our discussion about reaching a younger generation with Latin Jazz has been getting a lot of attention lately; if you haven’t checked it out, go read it HERE. Hector Alviles over at Latino Web Cafe added his two cents into the discussion with a post that furthered the ideas - check it out HERE. It’s an important issue, so it’s great to hear the ideas continue!

Faraway In The South is a new blog dedicated to the folkloric music of South America, something we would love to know more about here at LJC. Not only that, the author is the amazing Argentinean vocalist Sofia Rei Koutsovitis, so its going to be good. There’s only a couple so far, but we’re looking forward to the rest. Check it out HERE.

    Chip,

Here is another great review of Chembo’s new one

Hey Luis, thanks for that, Marc is a great writer; I’m glad that he covered Chembo on Jazz Wax. Do you have the album yet? I think that you’ll really like this one - I can’t get enough of it! Saw Chembo yesterday with Larry Harlow, what an amazing player. I’d love to hear your feedback on the album!

  3. Luis Torregrosa, July 21, 2009:

    Chip,

Just got it,but have yet to check it out-I have been waitng for this one for a few months,as Chembo told me about it when he played Detroit with Ray Vega.

How is Larry Harlow looking this days?

  4. chip, July 21, 2009:

Hey Luis - I think that you’ll really dig Chembo’s CD, it’s got all the right stuff. Once you give it a listen, let me know what you think, I always value your feedback.

Larry was in good form this past weekend, the band sounded great. Bobby Sanabria was on timbales, Louis Bauza was on bongo, Ray Martinez was on bass - just a smoking band. Mostly Fania era stuff, which was great for someone like me that was too young to experience it firsthand. Really nice show, got to hang a bit afterwards, what a nice group of guys.

    Chip,

Will comment more on the full review, but the Chembo is off the hook
