Latin Jazz This Week will bring you a weekly look into news from the Latin Jazz world. You’ll find new releases, recommended performances, web finds, and more. You can check out some current sounds in the Listening Center tab at the top of the page. Performance dates will be kept in the Live Latin Jazz tab at the top of the page.
I got the chance to attend the San Jose Jazz Festival this weekend, and walked away with a great feeling about the Bay Area’s support for jazz. The San Jose Festival is huge, serving massive amounts of people with all styles of music preferences. I heard a full day of Latin Jazz, and other people got a chance to hear blues, straight-ahead swing, salsa, free jazz, and more. Highlights for me were energetic and inspiring performances from some of the mainstays behind San Francisco’s incredible Latin Jazz scene, flautist John Calloway with his group Diaspora and trombonist Wayne Wallace with his quintet. I’ll be digging into some of the details of the performances over the next few weeks as parts of the Latin Jazz Photo Album feature. For now, just take my word - this is a festival to check out!
Brazilian vocalist and songwriter Milton Nascimento has made a long and steady impact upon the jazz world, touching artists from fusion, pop, and Latin Jazz circles with his indescribable approach to music. The unique songwriter played Brazilian music, but it never quite fit the bossa nova or samba mold. His music had a pop edge, but it avoided categorization as fusion or rock. Nascimento’s music has always been his own style, so you have to hear it to understand it. Ted Gioia over at Jazz.com has helped make that task a little easier for you by gathering 12 top tracks from Nascimento’s career. It’s a great compilation of his work, check it out HERE.
The NPR staff spent the weekend at the Newport Jazz Festival, providing live coverage on radio and Twitter. They captured some of the performances and have archived them on their website for all of us to check out. Latin Jazz vocalist performed at the festival on Saturday and you can stream her set HERE. Saxophonist Miguel Zenon also performed at the festival on Saturday; you can stream his set HERE. Pianist Michel Camilo performed on Sunday - his set hasn’t been archived yet, but it will be soon.
