Dr. Jose Cruz recently launched a great Latin Jazz blog, Jazz Latino New York, and he’s made some thought provoking articles already. In a reaction to all the attention upon Terry Teachout’s recent piece on the shrinking youth jazz audience, Cruz points out the growing potential for a Latin Jazz audience. He fills out his discussion that although Latin Jazz holds potential, there’s still a lot of work to do around audience development. Nevertheless, the future is out there – it’s a great read, check it out HERE.
Every week as I complete the Live Latin Jazz listings, I keep telling myself that there must be more Latin Jazz in Canada than I’m discovering, I just need to spend a little more time digging it up. While I can’t say that I’ve invested the necessary time, I did find a great article from Ottawa based journalist and blogger Peter Hum that introduced me to Trio Bruxo. This Brazilian Jazz trio led by pianist David Ryshpan (who also keeps a great blog HERE) takes a contemporary post-Jobim look at Brazilian music, and from the video posted by Hum, this group is one to check out. In addition to some good footage, there’s an interview with Ryshpan – interesting stuff, check it out HERE.
Latin Jazz bass players in New York, get your calendars ready and clear Saturday September 26 – you won’t want to miss this. Bassists Ruben Rodriguez and Oskar Cartaya will be holding a bass master class at the Aguilar Amplification Factory. These two monster players will be talking about the history of Latin Jazz as well as demonstrating techniques and rhythms that make their playing complete.
