NEWS
We’re not even a week into the voting and the LJC Best of 2009 Awards are already on fire! We’ve had an amazing amount of votes so far with some very interesting results; I’me really looking forward to the continued momentum over the next couple of weeks. We’ve had some fantastic additions to the ballot through the nomination process, including pianists Coto Pincheira and Pepe Céspedes, percussionist Gigio Parodi, and more - thanks to everyone for following the new protocol. There’s still two and a half weeks left, so spread the word . . . and if you’ve haven’t had the chance - VOTE NOW!

The Grammy Foundation announced their nominees for the 2010 Awards this past week. Congratulations to nominees Chembo Corniel for Things I Wanted To Do, Geoffrey Keezer for Áurea, Claudio Roditi for Brazilliance x4, Bebo & Chucho Valdés for Juntos Para Siempre, and Miguel Zenón for Esta Plena. I’ve had issues with the Grammy choices in the past, but their list this year is pretty good. I might make a couple of changes, but overall, there’s some strong choices here. check out the complete list of nominees HERE. Last week I mentioned the long list of recent Latin Jazz interviews on the outstanding podcast The Jazz Session from Jason Crane - well the list continues this week! Crane recently interviewed trombonist Luis Bonilla who recently released the fantastic album I Talking Now. Bonilla opens up with Crane about the album, Lester Bowie, his start on the trombone, and his time in Latin music. It’s a great listen - download or stream it now! You can find it HERE.

There are some serious serious musical treasures in the San Francisco Bay Area, and one of those gems made a major impact with a potent musical tribute this year - pianist Mark Levine and his group The Latin Tinge brought the music of Moacir Santos back into the spotlight with their release Off & On: The Music Of Moacir Santos. Thomas Peña has gotten the inside scoop on the album and Levine’s relationship with Santos in a recent interview over at Jazz.com. Peña talks with Levine about the making of the album, Santos’ legacy, and reflects upon the recording - it’s a great read, check it out HERE.
