Latin Jazz This Week will bring you a weekly look into news from the Latin Jazz world. You’ll find new releases, recommended performances, web finds, and more. We’re in our second week of the LJC Best of 2009 Awards and things are really heating up! We’ve definitely got some front runners at this point, but the voting is far from over - we still have another week and a half. There has been an outpouring of support for Pedro Giraudo album El Viaje this week, which resulted in the addition of an Album Of The Year nod as well as instrumental nominations for trumpet player Jonathan Powell, trombonist Ryan Keberle, and Giraudo himself on bass. There’s also a stream of potential nominees out there, so if you still see someone missing, nominate them now. It’s an exciting time, so don’t hesitate - VOTE NOW!
Marc Meyers over the the JazzWax blog has been writing about some great albums this past week, it’s been a nice overview of some interesting albums. One of the albums that he pointed out was the Aztec Suite by Art Farmer - this is an interesting piece of jazz history that shows the blurry line between traditional and Latin Jazz. There are arrangements by Chico O’Farrill and some guest artists - it’s definitely worth a listen. Check out the JazzWax write-up HERE.
Traditional radio stations are making the move towards the internet with increasing motion, but they are still important pieces of our cultural landscape - especially in the jazz world. Here in the Bay Area, we’ve had a fantastic 24-hour jazz station for years, KCSM and they’ve done some great things online recently. Something worth checking out now is there forums section that have already seen some activity - check them out HERE.
