Latin Jazz This Week will bring you a weekly look into news from the Latin Jazz world. You’ll find new releases, recommended performances, web finds, and more. You can check out some current sounds in the Listening Center tab at the top of the page. Performance dates will be kept in the Live Latin Jazz tab at the top of the page.
I’m always happy to celebrate the fantastic Latin Jazz scene here in my San Francisco Bay Area and even happier to support the people that are keeping it alive. There’s a ton of wonderful musicians out here and recently they’ve found a champion in Stephanie Dalton, an amazing person with a passion for Latin music. Each week Stephanie publishes the Urban Music Newsletter that provides information about upcoming events and the artists making them happen. Recently, she organized a Latin Jazz fundraiser for Haiti relief and created a weekly Latin music series at CODA Supper Club. The East Bay Express did a feature on the Bay Area Latin Jazz scene and Stephanie’s effort - check it out HERE.
The WABC television show Tiempo recently held an interview with legendary Latin Jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri in anticipation of his performance at the Iridium Jazz Club. It’s a great interview that finds Palmieri talking about his history and the state of Latin music. Fortunately, the video is archived online in two parts, so those of us who aren’t on the East Coast can check it out. Find the first part of the video HERE and get the second part HERE.
I usually let the live gig listings speak for themselves in the Latin Jazz This Week section below, but there’s one date coming up that those of you in New York just have to check out - the influential Grupo Folklorico Y Experimental Nuevayorquiño will be reforming to do a tribute to the Cuban tres player Arsenio Rodriguez. The concert will be held this Saturday March 20, 2010 at the Hostos Center For The Arts. That night, my mind will be with those of you in New York - if you are out there don’t miss it!
