Latin Jazz This Week will bring you a weekly look into news from the Latin Jazz world. You’ll find new releases, recommended performances, web finds, and more. HBO’s newest series Treme focuses upon New Orleans soon after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, providing plenty of intense drama but also a great insight into the extremely diverse cultural landscape of the city. Jazz plays a big part in the series, providing some incredible exposure around the world for the music. Caribbean culture sits at the foundation of jazz (and New Orleans) although the musical traces are not always as apparent. In a recent Blog Supreme post, percussionist Bobby Sanabria shares some insight into telling appearances of Caribbean culture on Treme. It’s fascinating stuff that will get you watching the show – check it out HERE.
In addition to being a fantastic musician with a great new CD – El Puente (The Bridge)
Trumpet player Gabriel Alegria and his Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet will be releasing Pucusana independently and they are currently fronting a fund raising drive to support the promotion and distribution of the album. The group will be utilizing a unique fundraising site, Kickstarter, as the home base for their efforts. You can head over and donate as little as $10 to their cause – or as much as you’d like. Each level of contribution comes with an attached reward, ranging from unreleased recordings to a personal concert from the sextet. It’s a great way to support the growth of Afro-Peruvian Jazz, so head over to Alegria’s Kickstarter site and donate now!
