Latin Jazz This Week will bring you a weekly look into news from the Latin Jazz world. You’ll find new releases, recommended performances, web finds, and more. The group Afinidad, co-led by pianist Edward Simon and saxophonist David Binney, creates some interesting takes on Latin Jazz that melds South American and Caribbean traditions seamlessly with modern jazz. It’s an intriguing combination that feeds on interaction and spontaneity – perfect stuff for a live setting. Thanks to NPR, you’ll be able to check out Afinidad in that ideal setting; they are the featured group on the recent episode of JazzSet. Drummer, bandleader, and educator Bobby Sanabria has been holding court each Wednesday night at Fonda Boricua Lounge for several months now, bringing a diverse array of groups into the club. Sanabria represents the finest of the Latin Jazz world and the buzz has reached past the Latin Jazz inner circle. This Wednesday, June 16th, the RCN Cable Network will be at the club to film Sanabria and his group Ascension for a full episode of the show Rhythm and Roots. This will be an exciting event that will spread the word about Latin Jazz around the world, so if you’re in New York, don’t miss it! Our recent Weekly Latin Jazz Video Fix on the 2010 Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Festival highlighted all the amazing music happening during that weekend . . . and what an incredible show it looked like. For those of us outside the Caribbean, the event passed us by without a sound, leaving us wondering about the musical magic. Thanks to the Puerto Rico Daily Sun, we can at least get a review, with some key comments about each of the performers. It’s a nice read, reaffirming the fact that I really need to get to that festival one day! Check it out HERE.
Another amazing educational opportunity just opened up for those of us interested in Latin Jazz – this one is for the vocalists out there. The New York Jazz Academy will be holding an eight-week Latin Vocal Workshop, taught by none other than the LJC 2009 Vocalist Of The Year, Sofia Rei Koutsovitis. The class will run from July 10th, 2010 through August 28th, 2010 on Saturdays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and it will cover important repertoire, technique, and stylistic ideas for performing Latin music. You can pay for the full eight weeks with $240 or walk into individual sessions for $40 each; either way, it’s a priceless opportunity. Get the full details HERE.
Trumpet player Gabriel Alegria and his Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet will be releasing Pucusana independently and they are currently fronting a fund raising drive to support the promotion and distribution of the album. The group will be utilizing a unique fundraising site, Kickstarter, as the home base for their efforts. You can head over and donate as little as $10 to their cause – or as much as you’d like. Each level of contribution comes with an attached reward, ranging from unreleased recordings to a personal concert from the sextet. There’s less than a month left to contribute – NOW’S THE TIME!
